11 Nopal Harvest and Preparation Workshop 10:30am Tubac, Arizona Laurie Melrood will lead a workshop about the eminently edible opuntia cactus known as 'Indian Fig.' Learn how to identify the 'Ficus Indica' cactus and techniques for harvest, preparation, preservation and food preparation from the fresh pads. Properly consumed prickly pear pads, stems and fruits have been shown to control cholesterol, heal skin and tissue, and positively influence blood sugar levels in persons with diabetes. Ongoing Historical Mine Tours of The Mining District Near Silver City, NM The Mining District Historical mine tour begins at the Bayard City Hall on the second Tuesday of every month. People are asked to call the City Hall at 537-3327 and let them know you plan to attend the tour so we will know what size bus to request. The price of the tour is $5.00 and a tour guide and brochures will be furnished. The tour goes from Bayard to Santa Rita with five stops in between where the guide will give a bit of history and interesting happenings in the local underground mines at each stop.
